I tell my non-sailing friends that heaving to is just putting your
automatic transmission in Park on a sailboat. The only boat I ever
had that did not heave to nicely was my old Cape Cod Catboat "The Old
Cat" (see below for more info on CCCBs) since they have no jib to
back wind. Still could
be done, but trickier.
