Hi wannabe, I anchor out about 30 nights a year and went many years without them with no noticeable affects, even in some 50 kts storms.
I have recently added 2, 4" cleats where the bow chocks would normally go. These were mostly to facilitate raft ups with a main anchor out and a boat on each side. The older standard cleat cannot accommodate a lot of line. The newer center cleats on the Bob Eeg boats have a much higher line capacity. If I am anchored alone I use one of the newly added side cleats and there is nothing there to chaff against.
