I think it should use scroll for years.
Think about it. You hover day, chose from 1 to 31, then month (could
be numeric of full month name), and for years, you could place a range
starting from current year with +- 5 years. To change to 1980 you
could scroll up and down, or use arrows which are located at the end
of the range.
