I don't think he was maining to say that $1200 was price gouging or anything as rude as that, he simply wanted to know why it was for this price.
In the hasty defenses that have followed the why has more or less been answered.

It has commanded such prices in the past.
Question more or less answered. Now it all comes down to finding someone with the spare dough that appreciates those qualities and a buyer is likely found and they both go home happy.
