In fact there was a film, not a theatrical, but part of the PBS American Experience series. It focused on Joe Lewis and Schmelling's lives as well as the two fights. Schmelling was bit enigmatic -- depending on who you talk to he was either an opportunist or a hero. He was very much a part of the Weimar cafe set, knew many of the Jewish intellectuals of the times, but was close to Hilter's inner circle when the Nazis were in power. One thing is certain, he was charismatic and very bright.

Dear Rich,
Thanks for posting this fascinating obit and story.
What a tale. We never hear the whole story do we??
This man's life would make a fascinating film itself.
Too bad no one will consider it worth since the
"younger generation" considers anything that happened
before 1980 to be irrelevant!
Best,
Joe Bonelli (FINALLY moved in in New Orleans!)
