Sad but true - By the time Paypal do their cross-border fees, take their
commissions, use an exchange rate of US/AUS dollars they appear to make up
and is always two-three cents more Paypal's way than the highest level of
exchange one can find anywhere, the gouge is extraordinary.

Natalie is right - here in Australia we simply do direct deposits between
accounts. At least it's a lot cheaper.

We also have a secure server on our website and eBay buyers and others can
just as easily use that to pay via VISA/MasterCard without going through
eBay's checkout system, lining Paypal/eBay's pockets and providing them with
an ongoing stream of information via the endless cookies both sites insist
can only function when set to receive.

Had Australian banks not jacked up charges for clearing IMOs and
international cashier's cheques, then most Australian sellers would still be
accepting those as a regular form of payment.

I've seen more than one Australian eBay seller accepting K-Mart vouchers as
a form of payment from Australian buyers! That one appears to be more an
attempt to keep the ATO out of the loop than anything else. It's almost as
amusing and naive as those sellers who seem to think that their Paypal
account is some sort of off-shore and untraceable bank account. Yeah, right.
