The roles James Stewart took after his active service in WW2 were a
marked difference to his roles pre-WW2.
His films for Hitchcock and Anthony Mann would be testament enough to this,
but have a look at his post WW2 filmography overall
and it very much reveals the actor as auteur in a way his pre-WW2 films
don't.
Simply one of the greats, because he chose roles that were clearly
satisfying to
him as an actor, and gave him a chance to work with at least two (Hitch
and and Mann) of
the great directors on a regular basis, mining dark parts of the soul
that only a person who had seen first-hand what human
beings were really capable of could understand and therefore portray.
As I noted in an email to Todd F. earlier today, Mila and I recently
watched BLOOD ON THE MOON
and PANIC IN THE STREETS, little knowing that Ms Bel Geddes would soon
be lost to us all
- except through her wonderful performances.
I also noted that her role in DALLAS, particularly that first stunning
season, that saw most of the serious filmed on location and outdoors,
made it perhaps the last gasp of truly great American series television.
Sorry folks, FRIENDS was a steaming pile of doo-doo to me and The
Russian, particularly as we saw so many young people take on the
program as a role models.

Vertigo, I disliked 'Scottie' intensely and my sympathy was only given

My favorite Bel Geddes performance was the relatively small role of
"Midge"
in Hitchcock's "Vertigo." I always wondered if she ended up with
"Scottie"
(James Stewart's character) after Kim Novak took that fatal plunge
from the
tower.
