you know while I admit that all these remakes today have mostly been either:
A) atrocious remakes (War of the Worlds, Planet of the Apes, Godzilla)
B) crappy ideas to begin with (Scooby Doo, Partridge Family)
the reality is that Hollywood has been remake city from the very beginning.
Glass Key, Ben Hur, Wizard of Oz, Maltese Falcon have all been made
or adapted several times.. even under other titles, and I dont hear
any gripes about the 1942 Glass Key being better or worse then the 1931 version
Seven Samourai wasn't just successfully remade, it was remade into
the mega-classic Magnificent Seven which no-one on this list will bad
mouth. Of course Magnificent Seven was directed by John Sturges with
McQueen, Coburn, Brynner and in that time period these guys were some
of the best ever in their field and they were making "a good movie"
which is what is lost on film making today
These films I mentioned were just flat out not good movies and
wouldn't have been any better if they weren't remakes of anything.
They're just bad films. But even though they were bad films, Planet
of the Apes still made beau coup bux and so did War of the Worlds
which really was an awful film
The bigger picture is that Hollywood today is afraid of making good
movies at the cost of big profits and they're afraid of making
original movies because they might not have any recognition which
results in promotion. Figure it out.. we're talking about Creature
From the Black Lagoon, and the film hasn't even signed on actors most likely.
Good films in my opinion are also not always good films to others &
the reverse is also true.
But there is an even bigger picture... These films are being made for
15-24 year olds.... which is the reverse of what films were made for
from 1900-1980's when most films were made for adult tastes. face
it.. adults are a lot smarter than kids are, so the films have been
"dumbed down" for the consumers.
A great film is made for all audiences.. something that can be
appreciated by 6 year olds & 60 year olds. Frankenstein (1931) is
great for kids because its the classic boogey man movie.. It's great
for adults because it is intellectually stimulating & tremendously
entertaining.. and this is what's lost on today's film makers.. or
maybe just the producers in many case.
But I think most "good films" today come from outside the studio
system. Kill Bill is a fabulous film made inside the studio system by
an outside studio guy (Tarantino). Lord of the Rings trilogy is a
great film made inside the studio system by an independent studio
insider and I love both of them and Last Samourai is a totally studio
insider job... they are fabulous & I watch them again every so often
(Just watched Kill Bill(s) last week), But I have to be honest that
it is a while between each time I see a studio film that I wait for
the DVD so I can see it again. Last Samourai I may only watch a few
times in my life.. I have already watched Kill Bill a dozen times on
DVD and saw them in the theatres first. So the studio film has a less
luster to me
But the film I enjoyed most in the past couple years was totally an
outside the studio system film made by an outside the studio guy who
financed the whole project with his own money so he could make the
film he wanted too and that film was Devil's Rejects by Rob Zombie.
Staying outside the studio system he's made what I think is the best
film I've seen the last couple years and I cant wait for that DVD.
But I digress.. The reason remakes suck today is because the studios,
producers, directors, actors and script writers don't care about
making good films.. they care about making money and these don't
necessarily go hand in hand.
