Also has a New Zealand Censor rating added.

Hi JR

I think that the "short stops" may relate back to when "one stops" were used. Some may have never heard of one stops because they rarely turn up. These were huge posters in one piece that were basically the size of three US one sheets in a horizontal format approx 41" x 81". They usually comprised three panels with the poster art from a US one sheet on one side, a group of 6 or so scenes from the film in the center panel and alternative art on the right hand panel. They were printed in the US but, I think, only used for international release. I have no idea why they were called "one stops" but it appears that they were only used from about 1978 - 1982.

I am guessing that during this period, the alternative art used in the right hand panel might have been also released as a single one sheet or "short stop" but I am only making a (slightly) educated guess.

These posters are obviously very rare and probably more desirable because they feature alternative art to the normal US one sheet. Some titles that were released in this era as "one stops" included Comes a Horseman and Moonraker.

I hada look  through various sites that have information about poster formats but I couldnt see anything on one stops or short stops and I havent been able to find any definitive information on these posters.

Surely someone on the list must know something.

John

John,

I'm just guessing here... but perhaps it means "short run"? i.e., maybe "short stop" was printed on the back of a regular one-sheet when the film was released for a special limited engagement distribution... like it was offered to theaters at a cheap price for a 1, 2 or 3 day run? Maybe just for midnight showings on Friday and Saturday nights? Something like that.

I asked yesterday about an unusual format for a US international one sheet that has the words "short stop" on the back as part of the NSS stamp. The only response I had was a rather witty email from Freeman who suggested that the term may be referring to a "well rounded athlete with quick response, and valuable in a clutch play, usually going by names like Biff, Scooter, or Jerry". Good one Freeman.

I'm sure that there are many on this list who would consider themselves experts on US poster formats. Surely someone has come across this form of poster. I am guessing that it is similar to the US printed "one stops" that are quite rare but I would appreciate it if someone could enlighten me.

Here are some images that may help. Note that there is a New Zealand censor sticker that has been attached but the poster was printed in the USA.
