You are not bidding against yourself in your example. You are bidding
against a hidden reserve. Your prior bids will never change your original "high"
bid until you actually hit the reserve.
For example, if the reserve is 150 and the start is 25 and one person has
already bid 30. That person's bid will register as 25 until you bid over
30 and if you bid 50 it will still show as 31. You can keep bidding any
amount as long as you do not hit 150. all bids will show as 31 until you
hit 150 or more and you will jump to 150 and you are now on the hook to pay 150
for the poster.
