I find this a very interesting thread. Some of our MOPO members are, I
think, correct in stating that some of the stars, films and genres may
not appeal to younger people. Heck, I have 3 teenagers who have never
had a reaction to the fact that we landed on the moon!! Many things are
situational for people, I find...they may collect out of a time when the
memory of the event or a movie or a TV series made a strong impression.
What's impressionable in 1972 isn't in 2002....

But I do believe that it is key to expose our kids to a collecting
hobby, whether it is the one we like or not. One of my sons has a
modest poster collection and is a great lover of movies but not "film".
But he has a phenomenal collection of GhostBusters items, because this
movie/series is a great childhood memory for him. My 15 year old has so
many Toy Story things that his room is overflowing (he is 15 now).
What the collecting hobby seems to do for them is: (1)allow them to hold
onto something pleasant and memorable from their youth, (2)become a
small "expert" in something, and (3)feel that they have something to
acquire facts, learn and create memories about. To me it seems, at
least for them now, the valuation is not meaningful...in other words,
they are not collecting with the idea of financial gain.

The last benefit I see is the accumulation of knowledge about a subject
and a potential for lifelong learning about the item/subject or field.
This seems to be part of the joy of the hobby for many people.

Now, having said all of this, I have met many people who do not collect
anything..they are very much in the here and now and don't see a whole
lot of value in collecting. And with that...to each his own.
