Why we no longer have "Private" Auctions
Since 2001, all of our major auctions on eBay have been "private"
auctions, and since 2005 all of our weekly auctions have been
"private" as well. We THOUGHT (because eBay specifically said so!)
that this meant that NO ONE (other than we the seller, and the
individual bidders) could see who was bidding on each auction. We
THOUGHT we were protecting our customers from the many scam artists
who try to sell eBay'ers items they don't have through fake "second
chance offers", and many other online scams. But we have just now
discovered that many thousands of eBay "developers" can view the
bidders on "private" auctions, and, worse yet, there are one or more
websites that share this information with their users. THEREFORE, WE
ARE ABANDONING THESE "PRIVATE" AUCTIONS (which were always really
"semi-private"!) AND WE ARE RETURNING TO REGULAR EBAY AUCTIONS, WHICH
MEANS ALL EBAY USERS CAN SEE ALL THE BIDDERS ON ALL OF OUR AUCTIONS.
We can't imagine anyone using these so-called "private" auctions,
under these conditions.
