In very early 1970, when I was seeing everything released, I went to a late
show on an opening week day, of M*A*S*H*. I knew nothing about the director,
or the film, and there were only about four people in the entire theater. It
was the most electrifying time I ever spent at the movies. I was just stunned.
I felt like I had personally discovered an unknown masterpiece. It was
completely different from anything I had ever seen before.

M*A*S*H* made me a lifelong fan of Robert Altman. For all the discussion of
Altman's films being a collaborative effort, it was always easy for me to see
Altman's guiding hand, even as he cut across all the genres. As with most
great artists/auteurs, the weakest of Altman's films are infinitely more
interesting than the best efforts of lessor directors.
