Well ...as long as you asked.
After the Trust Busters broke up the MGM ,Paramount and Warner Theatre's.
Many theatre's were owned by small time exhibitors. They might own anywhere
from 2 to 15 theatres in towns ranging from 5000 to 20,000. My dad was the
"sort of" number one man for the particular exhibitor up in SW New
Hampshire. He has about 13 theatre's; Latchis Theatres. Again my father was
housed in the Colonial In Keene which still stands and does film and live
shows, etc. I, myself, was always part of that theatre growing up. Cleaning
the Theatre, taking gum off the seats and floors, Selling the Tickets;
collecting the tickets , putting up the Three Sheets and of course One
Sheets, lobbies, and of course, making up the show, (the 20min reels of
film) and operating those beautiful simplex projectors...........part time
of course.
Later, Did go to college, but.............took one and two year breaks and
managed a theatre of 600 seats up in Newport, New Hampshire.(I had a candy
girl, a projectionist and one helper that collected
tickets................and lovvvvvvvvvvvvvvved it. However, the hand
writing was on the wall that I was never going to get rich and I saw the
"fall" coming. Thus, sent back and finished college................
Those were the days when you could tell the size of a town by the number of
theatres it had. Keene, NH had three. Newport, NH had two; Milford, NH had
one. Brattleboro, VT had Three and Winchendon, MA had one, etc, etc.
After I started my career I would search out a theatre that might still be
in operation and ask if they needed a part time projectionist or any sort
of help..............Just wanted to be part of the show I
guess.........Finally, The platters came out in the large 8 house complex's
and I even tried that part time............BUT, the glorious day of the
theatre were over; it just didn't do it anymore and progress had lost that
beautiful era of the 2 o'clock matinee; the 7pm and 9pm showing.
ahhhhhhhhhhhh. Those were the day; not too original, heh?
PS: yes..............I did get some of the paper; haha
