As a point of reference, I think it's fine, but I usually don't place
that much value in it. Nor does it bother me that some sellers use this
as a marketing tool. A poster or lobby card is worth whatever you want
to pay for it. My most prized lobby cards and posters, even the ones
that are worth very little are "priceless" to paraphrase the MasterCard
ad. FRANC

Subject: Re: [MOPO] FS: stating prior sales in an ebay listing

Stating prior sales to me is a waste of time on the part of the seller
and actually a partial turn-off. The seller is trying to make people
think that it is worth that much when in reality he is deluding himself.
There is one seller on ebay who does this on a regular basis and the
reference is to a price far in the past which has little value to
reality.

What most people fail to realize is that the person who bid the highest
in the past auction NOW owns the poster and therefore will not be
bidding. If two bidders were engaging in a battle in the last auction
the loser now most likely will get a bargain as the next highest bidder
is far down the ladder.

For example: Last week "Dancing in Manhattan" sold for $109.50. There
were 23 bids and the loser bid $107. The next highest bidder bid
$30.99. It is possible the 30.99 bidder will go higher but not near the
top unless the next poster is in a much better condition.

This is why stating what they sold for is worthless information. Most
will check on past auctions anyway to find out for themselves. In
addition, what about condition? Two are rarely alike.

Exactly, Jeff. And Michael, I definitely think the premise is fine, but
the inverse is true as well, has it gone for less anywhere recently?
The bottom line; the WITNESS insert that sold last week was worth $150
to SOMEONE. Unfortunately that may be the only person that it's worth
that much to, or it may actually be worth more. We're all looking for
some justification, some pattern, some history or some reason to support
our bids on an items. But I am always suspect of Sellers who get too
excited about their items so I usually do my own due diligence by
checking Bruce's past auction outcomes and Heritage's archives AND I
usually look at similar completed items on Ebay to see if any other
items have sold (or not) before I bid on anything.

your ad asks: is this title worth 150??? it sure is!!!!!!!

the truth is, it may or may not be. just because it sold for that price
last week, doesn't mean it is worth that. last week's bidding got it
that high. in the reverse, you may get 75.00 for it. that is the gamble
with ebay. i would bet that many potential bidders do an advanced search
on completed items to see what the range of an item up for auction
is,and what it sold for in the past.
