Well, Gus Van Sant took up the Psycho challenge rather too literally and flopped ( : But perhaps not whom we'd class as a major director anyway. Interesting that Hitchcock reverted to a bigger budget and state-of-the-art special effects (for the time) with The Birds, despite the huge success of Psycho. Would have been nice to know what would have happened if Hitch had completed his low-budget "Kaleidoscope Frenzy" arthouse/sexploitation project in the mid-late 60s, but it's perhaps revealing that even then the studios had the final say and weren't prepared to take the risk.
