THE EXPERTS PICK THE TOP TEN BEST
REALART LOBBY CARDS. (PART ONE)
Once upon a time there was a film company called Realart.
The Realart Company didn't make their own films, rather they
bought outdated films from other production companies, mostly
from Universal, hence the terminology "A Realart Re-Release."
Some of their earlier posters may also say "Released by Film
Classics Inc."
Most Realart horror/monster posters are dated 1948,1950, 1951
and 1953. The Realart company produced some very nice posters.
They weren't as solemn or serious as the original Universal posters
but rather flashy and garish, featuring bright shocking colors. What
makes some of them more desirable than the originals, is that they
focused more on the monsters than on the
actors. For instance,
an original Universal set may have three monster cards and five
dead cards as opposed to Realart boasting five monster cards
and three dead.
Back in the infancy of poster collecting, Realart was scoffed at,
collectors wanted nothing to do with Realart movie posters, reason
being, you could still get the originals for a lot less than you would
pay for a Realart poster today. But my, how times have changed.
No more can you buy a Realart "Dracula" or "Frankenstein"lobby
card for under five dollars.
A few films in the original Universal line-up that were not picked
up by Realart were; The Old Dark House, The Mummy's Hand,
The Invisible Agent and The Invisible Man's Revenge. Also some
lesser films like Pillow Of Death and Spider Woman Strikes
Back.
Now that you have to take out a mortgage on your home to own
an original issue Universal poster, Real
art has emerged as the
saner (?) alternative. But with the average collector opting for
the Realart versions of the Universal classics, the demand for
Realart is rapidly rising while the supply is rapidly diminishing
and probably will continue to do so, as the original issue posters
are tucked safely away in the vaults of the major league players.
There are some collectors, for aesthetic reasons (not monetary),
who actually prefer the Realart posters over the originals.
So, the question Brother Sean Linkenback proposed was,
"What are the top ten best Realart lobby cards of all time?"

This card is not only the best Realart card by far, it is one of the
best
Universal cards period. It is the ONLY scene card in the entire
Universal/Realart series to feature two of the monsters on a single
card (counting the serious films, not A&C), is an incredible close-up
of Lugosi and Chaney in make-up with crys
tal clear photography
that shows every hair in Chaney's make-up. Incredible and worth
more than any card from the original set even.
2) - Mummy - Karloff portrait card
Absolutely gorgeous and eerie shot of Karloff looking straight at you
with a menacing stare. If this card was in the original set it would be
a $25,000+ card easy.

Werewolf of London - Oland/Hull fight card
Fantastic card of Hull facing of with the root of all of his problems.
Another card that you wonder why it wasn't in the original set and
just a great scene from Universal's very first (and underrated
Wolf Man film.
4) - Mummy's Ghost - Chaney portrait card
The best Chaney portrait card from any of his in make-up roles.
Another one you shake your head and wonder why they didn't
use this in the original set.
5) - Frankenstein - Karloff by window
Beautiful
and haunting image of Karloff that captures the tragic
side of the monster. Great shot.
6) - Dracula - close-up of Van Sloan and Lugosi
Lugosi being taken aback momentarily by the one man who has
figured out who/what he really is.
7) - Black Friday - Karloff portrait w/hypodermic needle
Super spooky image of Karloff in medical garb getting ready to
something dastardly with that needle and haunting shadows behind him.
8) - Wolf Man - close-up of Chaney and Ankers
Another great scene that is not in the original set showing Chaney
in full
attack mode on poor Evelyn.
9) - A&C Meet
Frankenstein - Lugosi w/Monster and Costello.
Lugosi as Dracula, Strange as Frankenstein's monster and
both standing there with half of one of the most famous comedy duos
ever.
10) - Bride of Frankenstein - Karloff/Lanchester/Clive/Thesiger
I would have rated this card higher except for the fact that this
card is in the original set also. Karloff meets Lanchester in the
ultimate moment of what most consider the ultimate Universal
horror. Hard to get any better than
that.
Almost made the cut - Raven: Lugosi unwrapping Karloff's
Bandages, Mad Ghoul: Bey close-up w/Ankers, Son of Dracula
- menacing Chaney, Captive Wild Woman -- gorilla holding
Acquanetta.
