This is the number one reason I barely travel anymore! I used to travel all
the time, and I had a firm rule to never eat in a chain of any sort, only
eating in local places that were "one-of-a-kind". I would also go to the
shopping district and find cool local "one-of-a-kind" clothing stores, and
always come back with stuff never seen where I lived.

As you say (and Claude reiterates), that is completely gone now. Almost
every restaurant and store in one city is the same as any other. That took
away one of the great joys of traveling for me.

I remember my dad waxing nostalgic about stickball and egg creams, and I
would say yeah, but no air conditioning, and if you got the flu you probably
died. It is surely the same now. I will ask my kids what is better about
today's world than the world I grew up in, because I see lots that is much
worse.
