I'm in the middle of reading Eddie Muller's book, Dark City: The Lost World of Film Noir, and wanted to recommend it to anyone else who is a fan of film noir and Hollywood history of the 40s and 50s.
Written in a suitably hard-boiled style, the book offers a look at the crime movies of the era, both the famous and the obscure, along with background details and interesting trivia involving the people who put them together. For example, I hadn't known about Tom Neal's conviction for manslaughter for shooting his wife or the fact that Joe Breen (keeper of the nation's morality for the Hays Office) had ties to mobsters, including mob-connected Johnny Roselli, who was eventually murdered, his body stuffed in an oil drum and tossed into the ocean. Illustrated with lots of b&w stills, with a small color section at the back featuring posters for Out of the Past, Blonde Ice, Touch of Evil, Naked Alibi and more. Published by St. Martin's Griffin.
