My concern was not that it was a fake but that it was some kind of authorized reproduction from a later decade.
My reason for nailing this down is so I can describe it accurately when I list it for sale on my website. There are other sellers who can be surprisingly sloppy about what they list and how they describe their items. I like to know exactly what I am selling so my customers will know exactly what they are getting. That point aside, these obviously don't turn up that often since Bruce has only sold one, according to his database, and Heritage has never sold a single one. Also, of all the paper for this title, the 56 re-release paper is the most attractive and the most desirable. Sure, that doesn't translate into megabucks but it does make it of more than passing interest. Thanks again for everyone's help. It's really not "profitable" for anyone to make a fake copy/repro of a 1956 release 1-sheet of Song of the Song. The demand is just not there ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: MoPo List [mailto:mop...@listserv.american.edu] On Behalf Of Todd Feiertag Sent: Friday, July 30, 2010 2:23 PM To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Subject: Re: [MOPO] Need help: Song of the South R56 1-sheet I think this is close enough to indicate that the original R56 1-sheet issued by Disney was indeed 27x39. Dave, That's what I said. Your poster didn't look trimmed and it wasn't. I think... Here's what I did: I copied the only online image I could find of the R56 1-sheet from Bruce's image archive. He sold one in 2007. Using Photoshop, I cropped the image right to the borders. Then, with "Constrain Proportions" ticked in Image Size, I adjusted the width to 27". Constrain Proportions automatically adjusted the length of Bruce's image to 38.8". Thus the 1-sheet that Bruce sold three years ago was approximately 27"x38.8". Even allowing for any slight distortion in the photo and/or the online image, I think this is close enough to indicate that the original R56 1-sheet issued by Disney was indeed 27x39. Almost everything about it is correct: the art , 56/77 NSS number (no "R" in front of the number, though), Buena Vista logo, machine folded. Two curious things about it: First, it is printed on glossy stock. Was Disney ever known to print 1-sheets on glossy stock in the 50s? Second, it measures 27x39 and doesn't appear to be trimmed. Is it possible there was a repro issued of this poster in the 70s or 80s and that's what I have? If so, I can't find anything that matches it online. Anyway, if anyone could help me out with this, I'd appreciate it.
