the pop Culture dept of the BG university uses... inert My;er sleeves
and then they store in flat drawer cabinets at 55 degres and they use
molecular sieves that control the outgassing of the paper and also film...
also common Kitty litter is used as it absorbs the oders and outgassing
and is inert.
I have personally put magazines that had oder in Kitty litter and found
that it made them nuetralized to smales and oders.
the encapsulation method is good using the mylar however , professional
argue over the breathing of the items . some suggest air flow helps take
away the natural degadation that occurs as the chemicals that are used
in the paper process manufacturing are outgassed.
what happens in Comics and all paper is not just from outside exposuer
to air and light and mositure But that the paper itself starts to decay
naturally because of the acids in the process.
thats why achival papers are said to be " acid Free" and the PH suggests
that they will age
well.. please Note that some of the best survived manuscripts fro
Biblical era where on animal skins and have held up in non climate
contro;led enviroments just fine/
The adhesives and materials used in the linenbacking process could also
effect the poster itself if not done with proper materials..
In film its been suspected that the metal cans and reels cause whats
know as Viniger syndrome " a outgassing that turns the filmbase into
mush and also the eastman stock film turns red or worse..
solution has been Plastic inert film cans that allow the film to
breath.. I have some from TUScan that are actually from Austrialia and
are hat archivists now use..
The Corbis collection Im told uses the deep salt mines in Pa to store
thier pare and films as its a constant 55 and very good for storing
materials.
