McCartney Signed Guitar Tops The Bill At Ewbank's Inaugural
Entertainment Memorbilia Auction
After a sell-out stadium tour of America in 2009, Paul McCartney
embarked on seven arena shows across Europe, culminating with his first ever
public performance at the O2 Arena in London, his only UK date of the year. It
gave a technician working there the opportunity of a lifetime: a chance to ask
the ex-Beatle for his autograph.
Macca duly obliged, signing not on a page in the typical autograph
book, but on the body of an iconic Fender Squier Bullet Strat guitar, an
instrument inspired by his use of a Fender Stratocaster on the Beatles White
Album. Since then, the guitar has been kept safely locked away in its case and
unused at the technician’s home, until now.
On Wednesday November 13, the instrument will headline in the inaugural
standalone sale of entertainment memorabilia at Ewbank’s. Surrey’s premier
auctioneers of fine art and antiques. You can click on any of the images in
this email to link through to the item in our online catalogue, the full
catalogue of over 500 lots is available online on the Ewbank's website and on
the-saleroom.com.
Specialist Alastair McCrea said of the guitar: “Any Stratocaster guitar
has an iconic place in rock and pop history, but this instrument is very
special. It was a masterstroke on the part of the technician to get the Squier
Bullet signed by Sir Paul, which makes it a unique memento of the O2 gig.”
The guitar, signed to the front in silver pen, with its original case,
is estimated to fetch £1,000-1,500.
As drummer Roger Taylor announces plans to recruit an official Queen
tribute band to tour the U.S., another collector of pop and rock memorabilia
has decided the November sale is the one in which to sell his Queen “The Works”
album signed on the front cover by all four original members: Freddie Mercury,
who died in 1991, Brian May, John Deacon and Taylor. The autographs were
obtained in Berlin in 1986 and bids in the region of £300-500 are expected.
Elvis Presley memorabilia remains top of many collectors’ wish lists
and this sale does not disappoint. Most valuable is a pair of cream coloured
slacks, purchased from the famous celebrity fashion store in Hollywood, Sy
Devore, the “tailor to the stars”, and worn by the singer in the 1950s.
The slacks later passed into the ownership of Elvis’s personal
hairdresser and are displayed in a presentation frame with two photographs of
Elvis wearing them. They are estimated at £3,500-4,500.
An Elvis, Beatles, Cliff Richard promo poster from the New Musical
Express in 1963 was intended to hang in newspaper vendors’ booths and stands.
Rescued after service and folded for safekeeping, an example in the sale is
estimated at £300-500.
Movie star Veronica Lake has a star on Hollywood Boulevard’s Walk of
Fame but her career was dogged by mental illness, alcoholism and money
problems. Among a large group of film memorabilia is an autographed copy of the
magazine Cine Review from September 1946, inscribed “Many Thanks and Good
Wishes Veronica Lake 1947”, to be sold with three purses, each containing a
period pawnbroker type card stating “The property of Miss Veronica Lake”. They
are estimated at £250-350.
Printed movie memorabilia is a feature of the sale. An archive
collection of more than 230 photographs from the family of Gilbert Butler,
Property Master at Shepperton Studios from the 1930s to the 1960s, includes
autographed photographs dedicated to “Albert or Albie” from stars including
Alec Guinness, Celia Johnston, Jane Baxter, Harry Corbett, Robert Donat, Adam
Faith, Ronald Shiner and Anne Bancroft, among others.
The archive also contains photographs taken from behind the scenes and of
layouts, props, productions, on location and camera crews cover films including
Elephant Boy, Single-Handed, London Town, Wilson Keppel & Betty, The Belle's of
St Trinians, An Ideal Husband, Bonnie Prince Charlie, Anne of the Thousand
Days, The Elusive Pimpernell and others. It is estimated at £200-400.
Among the most valuable film posters is one for the classic Universal
1954 sci-fi monster horror movie “Creature from the Black Lagoon”, starring
Julia Adams. It is estimated at £2,500-3,500, while a rare lobby card from the
1919 silent film starring the famous escapologist Harry Houdini titled “The
Grim Game” is estimated at £600-900.
A complete set of eight Lawrence of Arabia lobby cards for David Lean's
best picture, the 1962
epic Lawrence of Arabia starring Alec Guinness is estimated at £400-600.
For collectors who appreciate the wonderful Art Deco architecture of
early picture houses – and mourn their loss – the auction has a collection that
includes a magnificent auditorium clock rescued by the manager of the Odeon in
Southampton at the height of cinema demolition during the late 1960s and early
1970s.
The two-foot square electric clock, which hung in the foyer has an acid
etched and painted face with fitted tube lights to its gold powder coated
surround and is stamped “Internalite' F.M. ENG Co Ltd, London”. It is estimated
at £400-600.
James Bond films quickly caught the imagination of toy manufacturers,
the licensed to kill Secret Service agent’s ever-present Aston Martin DB5 first
seen in Thunderball being among the most coveted by boys of all ages. A gold
coloured Corgi Toys model number 261 with opening roof, ejector seat, bullet
proof rear shield, telescopic overriders and ejectable baddie was THE Christmas
gift in 1965. In mint condition and complete with box, an example in the sale
is estimated at £60-90.
Definitely not a toy but an amiable enough companion for any collector
is a full size replica of K-9, Doctor Who's robotic dog, whose laser weapon
concealed in his nose, his encyclopaedic knowledge and his vast computer
intelligence saw off many a baddie. Lacking these attributes and constructed
from wood, but with authentic detailing and wheels, this period copy is
estimated at £200-400.
The sale will be on public exhibition at Ewbank’s premises, the Burnt
Common auction rooms in
London Road, on Monday November 11 from 10am-5pm; Tuesday November 12 from
10am-8pm and on the morning of the sale from 9.30-10. For further information,
