Many people have the misconception that before the civil rights movement blacks were largely solely relegated to playing stereotypical parts in movies (maids, chauffeurs, etc), and while some actors did so, there were also a significant number who went "against the grain" and insisted on solely playing parts that were *NOT *demeaning.
