Scott, You stick up for Columbus! Bravo! When I was there (admittedly this was a long time ago, I don’t even remember the year) the hotel was already dowdy. And I did not see any of these things you mention. So, I am sure you are right. But I did have to fly to St. Louis > Cincinnati > Columbus. The last leg was on a serious puddle jumper. The only thing I saw other than the inside of that hotel was a fancy-ish restaurant where I dined with Gary Vaughn, Jose Carpio, Tony Nourmand, Joe Burtis and some other folks I don’t quite remember. And I was there for two days only. So pardon the seemingly snarky comment. It was more of a shout-out for Austin (as if it needed one) than a put-down of Columbus. I think the idea of actually having CINEVENT here is fraught with the very real possibility of losing money big-time unless you could interest the locals. And every weekend they have lotsa stuff competing for their gen-x and millenial attentions. Bikes, balloon rides, rodeos, The Blanton, Four Alamo Drafthouses, The Dell Children’s Museum, The Live Music Capital of the World. Having said all that, Austin is very film literate. The Austin Film Society now operates their own theater, The Marquesa. They leased the site of an old (90s!) theater in a shopping center. It’s very nice. Next month Richard Linklater will show films of the eighties and lecture on them. First up: STRANGER THAN PARADISE.
