Alan,
I bought an All Quiet on the Western Front OS in 2003 that was owned (I
believe) by a dealer or collector on this board. The original OS was mounted
on a board and covered in shellack.
Before purchasing, I sent it to Studio C to test whether there were solvents
that could remove the shellack without destroying the paper, and also solvents
that could remove the glue holding it to the board, without destroying the
paper. Studio C was able to find a way to do both. I finalized the purchase
and Studio C completed the process. It cost me about $2,000 (in this case and
in 2003). The poster looks fabulous and is now on linen. The only telltale
sign of its' "former life" is that the paper absorbed just a bit of the
shellack which made it slightly stiffer than a normal poster. To the average
fan this would probably not be noticeable, but a seasoned collector might feel
the difference.
I'm not sure where you might go for service now, as it's been almost 20 years
since Studio C did mine, but I can assure you that it can be done.

Looks like a handful of serious serial one sheets are headed my way. Each one
is white border trimmed and mounted solidly on wood. The kicker is they've been
varnished. Very old school collection long In storage. Yipes!
Who in LA would have the skill to remove these beauties and restore them? Did
the varnish kill them? Should I just try and sell as-is?
Thanks folks for any ideas on saving these treasures.
