All,
in Anthony McWatt's summary of the MOQ he states:
"The MOQ is truly empirical. Science is not. Classical science starts with
a concept of the objective world - atoms and molecules - as the ultimate
reality. This concept is certainly supported by empirical observation but it
is not the empirical observation itself."
According to my understanding of science (and I think Popper's), it starts
with experiencing the Universe (DQ) and then trying to explain(hypotheize)
these experiences in a way that is testable and hopefully consistent with
other facts. The continual repetition of experience, hypotheses, test, and
knowledge restructuring builds our collective knowledge (SQ). MOQ's quality
experience matches and extends Popper's views quite nicely. I hope people
are not trying to say that there is anything wrong with the SOM (other than
it doesn't go far enough in explaining the whole process)?
Popper, I believe, is the one that came up with the Swamp of Knowledge
analogy. It states that building up knowledge about the Universe around us
is like building an ever expanding structure in a swamp. The above ground
structures(useful results) are anchored by pilings driven deep below the
surface(knowledge). By driving the pilings ever deeper and wider(via R&D),
one can support ever larger structures(more useful results). Bed
rock(absolute truth) need not be present. Faulty pilings(errors &
inconsistancies) do occur and are dealt with. Restructuring of the
pilings(corrections)is done routinely.
MOQ appears to provides guidance and direction to the whole process. Again
I didn't see any conflicts between MOQ and this. I would like your comments
on this. Am I missing something? I see MOQ as a much needed correction to
the the we understand the development of knowledge, but just a correction?
It will not overturn our basic approach, but will enlighten us as to its
true nature?
