Moderator's Note:
Hello
Fellow Morphometricians,
In my experience, morphmet posts that
contain attachments do not generally distribute. Therefore, after one
failed attempt, I have removed the attachment from this message. The
attached article was:
Bookstein, F and others. 1999.
Comparing frontal cranial profiles in archaic and modern Homo by morphometric
analysis. The Anatomical Record 257: 217-224.
I
apologize for any inconvenience that its removal may have posed, and I apologize
to everyone in the "and others" that I did not list for space reasons.
Best,
JS

Hello
all,
I am a senior at UC Santa Cruz and have
been using our NextEngine 3D scanner to catalogue our entire human osteology
collection, as well as our collection of paleoanthropological casts. I have been
attempting to perform a comparison of our Ngandong 2 juvenile Homo
erectus frontal to those of modern humans, and ideally would replicate
the methods used by the article 'Comparing Frontal Profiles in Archaic and
Modern Homo by Morphometric Analysis, which I have attached.
Unfortunately I am very new to Geometric Morphometrics Analysis and need some
help to make sense of the 3D scans I am uploading.
I
have had a lot of help and support from a mentor who is currently a professor
Chile, but it is becoming clear that to understand the work-flow (collecting
land-marks, creating sliding semi-landmarks, Procrustes superimposition, etc),
as well as to become familiar with much of the software involved in GMM, I will
need some hands on help or coaching. I chose the Ngandong 2 specimen as
something of a primer to introduce myself to all of the essential methods in
performing GMM. Ultimately I would like to extend my comparisons to ontogenetic
shape changes seen in tandem in crania and mandibles in recent human evolution
(the last 300,000 years). I have a number of hypotheses I would like to test and
would be more than happy to expand on them in
person.
If anyone is willing to spare a few hours
introducing me to the basics, I would be extremely grateful. I have a flexible
schedule and am willing to travel as far north as UC Davis. I am already
familiar with ScanStudio, MeshLab, Blender, and AutoCAD. MorphoJ was recommended
to me and I have the application, but have no idea how to use it. I can quite
easily create sagittal profiles of frontal bones using the 3D modeling software
I am familiar with, but do not know how to place landmarks on such profiles, or
create the necessary semi-landmarks between points such as glabella, bregma,
etc.
Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks,
Tristan
