Rosie, my schedule is (approximately) 8-9:45 reading, spelling, phonics or
word work, 15 min. recess, AR from 10-11:00, lunch till 11:45, math after lunch
for 45 min to 1 hour, English for 30-45 min. then Science or Social studies
till school is out. It is tough to get it all in. Through the efforts of many
teachers, however, our AR time is held as almost sacred. Several schools in
our district have gone to literacy blocks. Strangely enough, these schools
have principals who look down on the AR program. In some of those schools, the
kids can only check out an AR book once a week when their class goes to
regular library class. Those schools are coincidently on probation. Say what
you
will about AR, we have put it to good use. Last year and this year (after NM
implementing a new state test) our two third grade classes have scored second
in the district in reading. Everything helps.
