I do this lesson as a shared reading experience. I have enlarged about 10
pages from the beginning of the book. To introduce the lesson I talk about
what it means to snythesize information. How we have to use all of the
reading strategies in order to make meaning. I have an overhead that says,
"Readers use thinking strategies" to make meaning. Each word, phrase,
sentence, adds to the whole picture. Meaning becomes clear as the reader
creates images, infers, decides what's important, asks questions, makes
connections. We call this synthesis." Basically we go through as much of the
text as we can in a class period using MOT strategies and synthesizing...I
model the first few pages and then students try it themselves. It is a good
piece of text to use for synthesis with middle school students. It really
holds their attention.
