Carol,
I love to use Patricia Polacco books for teaching connections, but some of my
oher favorites are Cynthia Rylant's "When I was Young in the Country" and "When
the Relatives Came", Lester Laminak's "Saurdays and Teacakes", "Trevor's Wobbly
Tooth", Wiliam Steig's "Brave Irene" and "Sylvester and the Magic Pebble". I
think that Sylvester is about my all time favorite! My class does so many other
activities with that book. I have a jar of pebbles that have words written on
them from the book - the colorful language - and we enjoy using those words in
our writing. I also like to give each student their own magic pebble (a red
glass pebble used in vases, etc.) and have them write their own stories,
wishes, etc. I read to kindergarten once a week (I'm the reading spec. for the
building)and a favorite is Trevor's Wobbly Tooth - there isn't a kindergarten
student in the building who doesn't seek me out to show me their wobbly teeth!
Oh, yeah, Cynthia Rylant's "The Great Gracie Chase" and "The Old Lady Who Named
Things" are also great for teaching connections. Kevin Henkes' "Sheila Rae, the
Brave" and "Chrysanthemum" are good. "Goldilocks Returns" - I'm not sure who
the author is - is good for some easy text-to-text connections. If you're brave
enough to tack the Dumb Bunnies, it makes some fun connections for text-to-text
also. I also love the Pigeon books by Mo Willems for the little guys - but even
my 4th graders enjoy them - I learned how to draw the pigeon from Mo himself,
so I love to show the kids and they love re-writing his stories. Last Christmas
we created our own pigeon book - "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Sleigh". So
many books, so little time.....

I'm wondering if anyone uses any picture books to accompany Hatchet?
Do any of you have good titles of picture books on the topics of survival, the
Canadian wilderness, and/or living alone?

Thanks in advance.
Libby
