I have been teaching my students using Reading Workshop and Literature Circles for some time now. I use STW, I Read but I Don't Get It, and Frank Sarafini's books on Comprehension Strategies. I work really hard in building a community of trusting and sharing readers in my classroom. This year, our grade level team did a book study on Test Talk in the Reading Workshop. I found it was an excellent tool for incorporating the test taking skills into the reading workshop. I don't use it until January after my reading workshop has been established, and my students are reading, thinking cognitively about their reading, and bouncing conversation with their authentic literature. When test time is near, I go back and show them using the mini-lessons in this book how the test author's ask questions and how that applies to what they are already doing as readers. We had a phenomenal year with our test results. 43 out of 44 of my morning and afternoon 5th graders passed, half were commended, and only 1 failed (special ed student who only missed it by 1). I hear many of you talking about the Toolkit. Is it very user friendly? Lisa Branon
