Switched is perhaps not the right word. Our district has endorsed balanced
literacy for many years, allowing teachers to use either a workshop or
center-based approach. However, implementation has been spotty and this
particular schools struggles with regular, sweeping staff turnover. In the
past three years, but particularly in the past two, we have focused intensely
on reading instruction. Lots of observations, lots of modeling, lots of
opportunities to observe in model classrooms, lots of in class modeling and
support in planning. We are not completely there yet-who ever is? We have much
yet to refine and some resistance from a couple of folks BUT all of this work
is beginning to manifest itself in student performance.
