My 4th graders completely love anything by Jean Craighead-George -
especially The Gator of Gumbo Limbo.

Also, we adore The City of Ember & The People of Sparks (sequel).

Gossamer is another good one.

Any of these books would fit your 'journey' theme.

:) And, I can enthusiastically add another vote for Edward Tulane.  It was
our first read-aloud of the year.  It was really a fantastic
reading-community builder!
