You might consider using the basal stories as a shared reading only. Then, students could choose "good fit" texts at their independent level for independent reading time (from the class library). For guided reading, you can utilize the Reading Street Leveled Readers for your students that work at, above and below grade level or incorporate the use of some other leveled texts (geared toward students' specific instructional reading levels) if you have a literacy closet.
