I was also going to recomend Word Journeys for spelling. We use it and have gotten away from calling "it" spelling, but rather saying Word Study. Our students were memorizing words and we wanted to deemphsize memorization and stress learning patterns that would help spelling new words that come up. "If you can spell _____ you can probably spell ______." The other thought I had was about the struggling 1st grader...can he read what he writes? I found that some students that had difficulty remembered words better if they wrote and then read their own writing. Also I used scrambled sentences with struggling first graders. Put the words on cards that the student manipulates and puts into order. This would tell you if he knows the words or is memorizing text. Only use familiar text for this activity. Is this student also learning to read in another language at the same time? Maybe there is confusion. And as a side note, what you were describing sounds a lot like struggles my son had. He is now teaching High School but still has a Learning Disibility and still continues to have difficulty pronouncing words, being consistent in recognizing words, and spelling. But he learned to work with that. Build on the strengths your student has and keep him reading. Your hard work will pay off! I can also send our grammar scope and sequence if anyone is interested. I did email this to many of you earlier in the year. Just email me and I'll attach it and send it to you. Kay Kay Kuenzl-Stenerson Literacy Coach Merrill Middle School 108 W.
