Our list is once again on emergency moderation due to a member hacked email account sending out spam (I intercepted before it was posted). When I see this it usually is followed by an increase in this sort of detestable activity.
I just want to caution people about "hacked email accounts". This has been seen with messages sent to our list primarily from AOL accounts, but others are not safe. It has been an ongoing problem over the last month or so. A couple things to help everyone: 1. NEVER click on a URL from our list unless you have total confidence on where that click will take you. So if you see a URL from a member that looks strange or out of character, please (double please!) RESIST the urge to click. If a message contains ONLY a URL, the NEVER click on it. 2. Keep your computer updated with some sort of virus protection. A good free PC vendor is Panda Cloud (Google this). Now, this is not saying that a Mac person using AOL is totally safe - everyone please use diligence. 3. If you suspect problems, look at your "Sent Mail". Should you see a bunch of messages that you don't remember sending, then contact your provider and/or immediately suspend the account (just like you'd do with a compromised bank card/identity). 4. As mentioned before, I put myself on moderation due to a glut of "spoofed" emails that have been sent to the list. So, please don't think that you are beyond the reach of nefarious ne'er-do-wells and their lackeys. I regret having to return to emergency moderation as it does impede the progress of dialogue in the community. As I moderate, I will often reject the terse "I agree" or "Thanks for the help" or myriad of other five word messages sent to the thousands of members that would be better sent to the individual. Please remember to thanks and send compliments to the *individual* and NOT, repeat *NOT*, to the entire list. Hopefully we'll be back to normal in a few days (ahem - I used to tell my students "normal is a cycle on a washing machine" anyone know the book this quote is from? - contact me off list to compare notes). ;-) Again, thanks for your caution and understanding on this matter.
