At the middle school in our district, the AIMSweb Maze (for "comprehension") is
used as a universal screener as well as for progress monitoring.  I would not
recommend its use, as it really only asseses sentence level comprehension.
And when struggling readers (in RtI) take this test so frequently, it seems to
me that gains made may be more of an indication they have improved their
ability
to take this type of test than a true measure of comprehension improvement.
The
results can also be deceiving in that students can reach an appropriate number
of "words circled correctly" yet have MULTIPLE errors.  Like Melanie said about
DIBELS, I don't think this is a great assesssment tool and hope we discontinue
using it, soon!

We use DIBELS at the elementary level.  I do not think it is a reliable
source.
Students that can read fluently based on the DIBELS information can be placed
in
higher level reading classes even if their comprehension is terrible!  Then on
the other hand students have poor fluency but high comprehension can be placed
inappropriately as well. It is just not a great tool and I wish we didn't use
it!
