I think there it's less need for MINI-lessons at this age. I actually like the traditional format of WW of lesson, engagement, sharing. Of course, Nancie Atwell remains the best of the best, and her DVD and lessons are truly amazing, but I always really like the lessons that Ralph Fletcher developed (and published) to go with his black book on writers' workshop. Another great source for lessons for both fiction and nonfiction are the craft lessons books. However, I would never just take right off with lessons; it's too important to understand the philosophy and best practices of writers' workshop. I don't think anyone can beat Regie Routman's Writing Essentials, Lucy Calkins' The Art of Teaching Writing, and Atwell, but it's SOOO important to have the"whole picture" from someone who conveys WHY lessons work. Has anyone mentioned Steve Peha as a great source for all things workshop, free, and on the web?

Read Nancy Atwell In the Middle and visit her school website. I also like
her Lessons that Change Writers. She is my "go to" geru for writing at this
age!!

Pat Quinn, The RTI Guy also has great resources for RTI. You can find
him
online and he also holds seminars. I recommend attending one of his
seminars.
He really does a fantastic job explaining RTI from a teacher's
perspective.

PS If you have any book recommendations I'd be interested in that
