Tennie, you are saying they decode at a high level but comprehend little or nothing? Can you assess their approximate comprehension level? I would then get books at that level or slightly higher and have them read with you and discuss the story language, themes, make predictions and use all of the Strategies That Work comprehension work (asking questions, visualizing, making connections, etc.) It sounds like they think reading is word calling and don't have the connection to meaning.
