Are you familiar with The Glory Field by Walter Dean Myers? It actually spans
from the slave trade to the 1990's but it is one family's story. Nice theme
that runs through out. EASILY broken into eras and can do one era at a time.
The segment during the Civil War is especially good and fits beautifully with
nonfiction texts such as The story of Harriet Tubman, excepts from Frederick
Douglas, etc. The copies I have used of The Glory Field bound by Glencoe has
companion nonfiction texts in the back of the binding. Depending on the level
of your students, most of my 8th graders were able to access the text
independently in book clubs. Definitely worth a look!!
