I have slowly come to realize that the middle schoolers in my building have a strange idea about what they read and about class discussions. They think if someone writes about racism, for example, that person is a racist. This isn't true of all the students, but certainly more than half of them seem to think this. If they read about cruel treatment that happened in the past, they think the author supports this treatment. I think that some of the students are afraid to say anything negative during discussion because then they think they will be labeled as something bad. Have any of you noticed this in your students? What do you think is going on here? Any suggestions about how to lead them to the idea that you can talk or write about something without thinking it's a good thing?
