1. I like motion, and have been using it for years.
It works wonderfully. Thanks to all who have contributed.
2. Motion occassionally loses contact with my IP webcam.
This creates a video with a greyed-out region, like
http://www.merrill-samuelson.com/permanent_display/shot1.jpeg
Usually the connection is re-established shortly afterward.
However, every time this glitch happens, an event is
generated and my on_event_start script is executed.
Normally these occassional glitches have not bothered me,
but now I have hooked my computer to an electronic water hose
valve to shower the stray cats who are spraying my house
every night, and I need to have a lower false positive rate.
I tried setting the minimum_motion_frames to something
higher, like 5, thinking that only one frame should really
change with the connection is lost. However this has not
helped and every lost connection still creates an event.
Is there an easy way to keep lost connections from
generating events like this?
Or is it time for me to hack the code?
I am using motion-3.3.0.trunkREV557-10.el7.nux.x86_64
Thanks for any tips.
-Frank

Hello Motion users
I've got a webcam running in a nesting box, but the picture quality is very
poor: whenever there is movement, frames get torn and overlapped.
For example, see http://birdbox.chrisdennis.co.uk/camera2-overlap.jpg
The feed at http://birdbox.chrisdennis.co.uk goes via Paparazzo.js from
https://github.com/rodowi/Paparazzo.js
Any suggestions? I've tried tweaking various settings.
Here are the details:
* Motion-mmal from https://github.com/dozencrows/motion/tree/mmal-test
* Running on Raspbian on a Raspberry PI B+
* Cheap analogue camera providing a composite feed via...
* ...EasyCAP video to USB gadget (like this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Easy-Cap-VHS-To-DVD-Audio-Video-Converter-Capture-Card-Adapter-USB-UK-Stock-/301558215736)
...
* ...which shows up as /dev/video0. 'lsusb -v' says:
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 1b71:3002
Device Descriptor:
bLength 18
bDescriptorType 1
bcdUSB 2.00

avconv doesn't seem to like it much:
$ sudo avconv -f video4linux2 -i /dev/video0 test1.avi
avconv version 9.14-6:9.14-1rpi1rpi1, Copyright (c) 2000-2014 the Libav
developers
built on Jul 22 2014 15:08:12 with gcc 4.6 (Debian 4.6.3-14+rpi1)
[video4linux2 @ 0x162b5e0] Estimating duration from bitrate, this may be
inaccurate
Input #0, video4linux2, from '/dev/video0':
Duration: N/A, start: 326159.516607, bitrate: 165888 kb/s
Stream #0.0: Video: rawvideo, yuyv422, 720x576, 165888 kb/s, 1000k tbn, 25
tbc
File 'test1.avi' already exists. Overwrite ? [y/N] y
[mpeg4 @ 0x162c1e0] timebase 1/1000000 not supported by MPEG 4 standard, the
maximum admitted value for the timebase denominator is 65535
Output #0, avi, to 'test1.avi':
Stream #0.0: Video: mpeg4, yuv420p, 720x576, q=2-31, 200 kb/s, 90k tbn,
1000k tbc
Stream mapping:
Stream #0:0 -> #0:0 (rawvideo -> mpeg4)
Error while opening encoder for output stream #0:0 - maybe incorrect parameters
such as bit_rate, rate, width or height
You can probably tell that I'm not an expert at any of this. But a better
picture would help to amuse the grandchildren.
Cheers,
Chris

This seems to be known issue reported few time, like this:
http://www.lavrsen.dk/foswiki/bin/view/Motion/SupportQuestion2012x02x27x155712
The only workaround - don't use threads. Start two instances of motion
process instead
