I think I've found out what is happening. It seems to be around the time
motion records something when it is putting the lastsnap jpgs for the
cameras in the incorrect directories. Probably explains why I get
horizontal lines around the area motion is detected in the mp4s. (I was
told the lines are from the other cameras, the work around is to run
multiple instances of motion.)

The only reason I noticed this is because I have a web page displaying all
4 cameras via the lastsnap jpgs which update every 5 seconds. This way I
can view the cameras through a proxy server. I would think this is an
important bug if I am right.

I like the idea. But furthermore, motion probably requires a little rewrite
of how template strings are defined and used. Making them global and
reusable is a great optimization. You are welcome to suggest a patch
(preferably on github)

Hi,
I've got a webcam attached to a raspberry PI, I use it to view my CNC machine
when I am in the next room. The problem I am having is that motion captures to
many images that it fills up my 16 GB sd card too quickly. Is there an option
to tell motion to stop capturing any images at all? I want to be able to only
view the machine but not record anything.
Thanks!

If you just want to stream a video from a web cam, without motion
detection, there is more efficient (CPU efficient) way to do that using
mjpg-streamer:
<http://sourceforge.net/projects/mjpg-streamer/>
There are many how-tos for Raspberry Pi, very easy to set up.

The only caveat is that your web cam must be UVC compatible, so check here:
<http://www.ideasonboard.org/uvc/>

Cheers,
Roman
