No need to apologise. I have a vested interest as I will shortly be using
motion on a pi and so am keen for you to sort out the problems before I
fall over them :)

[jbaker@pi ~]$ cat /usr/lib/systemd/system/cameras-motion.service
[Unit]
Description=Run motion
After=network.target

[Service]
Type=forking
PIDFile=/var/run/motion/motion.pid
ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/motion -c /usr/local/etc/motion/motion.conf

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

And in motion.conf:

daemon on
logfile /var/tmp/motion.log

Finally, to ensure service starts when Linux boots:

$ systemctl enable cameras-motion

And to start it now:

$ systemctl start cameras-motion

Also, 'disable', 'stop' and 'status' verbs exist.

By this do you mean to say that the process started by /usr/bin/motion will
fork another process and that motion itself will then terminate?

Perhaps with daemon on the main process does die. I don't know.

Not sure how it works. Runs in the background.

The John Baker replay worked!

This is my motion.service:

[Unit]
Description=Run motion
After=network.target

[Service]
Type=forking
PIDFile=/home/pi/motion/motion.pid
ExecStart=/usr/bin/motion

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

I suppouse the problem was due to confusing motion.service file name, in
fact at /etc/init.d there was the motion shell startup script for the old
rc.d system. So i didn't know what happened when i run systemctl
enable/start motion.

Thank for your help
