Did I understand correctly, you want to change v4l picture settings at
runtime without restarting motion?

I do not understand this question fully.

I do not change any parameter in motion.conf. I just need to restart motion to
get a proper image again. Otherwise after the changed light conditions I get
an almost completely gray picture without any details.

So what I am looking for is parameter settings in motion.conf which make the
camera or motion to adjust whatever is needed to get a proper picture when
light conditions change from day to night or vice versa.

If your camera does not support auto exposure, you can change exposure at
runtime using v4l2-ctl utility without restarting motion
