At the risk of going off-thread, is this what
??? output_pictures best
does?

Sorry to revive this from May, but I've discovered this might be the
reason I keep losing one of my cameras. It's a simple Logitech USB
camera. The only camera on the PC. Single motion.conf file. But now,
almost daily, for some reason, the video device file keeps changing.
/dev/video0 disappears and the camera appears on /dev/video1.
But the strange bit is, this happens *when the machine is up*.
I'm trying to track down what might be happening when this occurs. e.g.
Same time each day, processes running etc. But in the meantime, if
anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears.
Thanks
Dougie

Look in syslog to see if any clues, I suspect you may see that the usb
device is disconnected then reconnects. If so try it in a different USB
socket with different cable if possible. A workaround may be to use a udev
rule to force it to a consistent device.

I've never used output_pictures_best.
I use the "%D changed pixels" conversion specifier to insert the number of
changed pixels in each image into the database.? It's then pretty easy to
retrieve the image with most changed pixels and email it.
