Just a brief follow-up on this.
I'd forgotten I also had a USB disk drive on this PC on which I did
overnight daily backups. I had a script that mounted and dismounted the
disk drive so that it was not permanently mounted. It was this that was
causing the mess with device files changing.

It isn't consistent across machines although I've tried to standardize
as much as possible with equipment and versions. (This is 4.1.1 on
Debian 32 bit).
