I have a 16 channel card.
I is arranged as 4 devices with 4 inputs.
Channel 1 is /dev/video0 input 0
Channel 4 is /dev/video3 input 0
Channel 16 is /dev/video3 input 3
The other day I set up the inputs for 5-16 but did not put any cameras.
Today I check what has been recorded and some of the channels greater than
4 have recorded flashes from their other inputs on the corresponding video
device.. why?
For example, I loo at the recordings for channel 16 and it's mostly blue
screen recorded with flashes of video from channel 4...

Have a read up on the ?round robin frames? option:
https://motion-project.github.io/motion_config.html#roundrobin_frames
Basically, you have a card that is capable of running four cameras properly, or
more than four cameras, but with a greatly reduced frame rate. To read the
four camera inputs on each chip, the video card has to switch from one input to
the next. Each time it does this, it takes a while for the chip to synchronise
with the incoming stream of video frames. You need to tell Motion to ignore a
few frames each time it changes inputs or you?ll get false detection of
movement and see partial frames and other artefacts of the switching process.
Motion does a pretty good job of dealing with the problem, but it?s really a
hardware limitation that can?t be properly overcome in software. As they say
here in Australia ?you can?t polish a turd?.

Thanks, I understand the hardware, I didnt understand the round round
robin settings. I will try it out. I guess I didnt realize why this issue
existed because as a commercial DVR under windows it was all smooth, and
the card seems so common that I didnt realize cards with more direct
hardware exist for this.
