        system

I am running motion 4.0 (this is the version installed by apt-get on my
pi) with a Pi camera on a Raspberry Pi 3b+ under the latest version of
Raspbian Stretch. I have two problems:

1) I can browse to and view the video display screen with no problems if
I run a browser on the Pi and use its localhost address and the correct
port number, but I cannot see it from other systems on my local network
- I get a 'site not found' error. I do also have Apache running on the
pi, and can browse to its default page from other networked systems with
no difficulty, so I don't think this is a network problem with
connecting to the pi. I do have stream_localhost set to off. Is there
another necessary setting that I am missing?

2) What I am seeing on the monitor page appears to be the standard debug
display (static image updated every second). Even if I stand right in
front of the camera and wave my arms about, I do not see a full motion
video. Is this correct? I currently have the saving of images and video
files on motion detection disabled (I don't want to fill my pi's SD),
but I thought that I should see detection working on the monitor page.

Any and all helpful thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated.

I got 2 of these cameras since they were recommended on the motioneye
mailing list, and am trying to set them up on my rpi. I got the
lastest rasbian going as downloaded today.

I had one camera working just using /etc/motion/motion.conf and then
decided to get the 2nd one going. Both plugged in directly to the USB
ports. Linux sees them OK and /dev/video0 and /dev/video1 are both
there and have the same permissions.

I have /etc/motion/motion.conf set up to include
/etc/motion/camera1.conf and /etc/motion/camera2.conf.

In camera 2 the default "input" was 1 and the comments say for USB it
should be -1. I don't really understand what this refers to so am
switching it back and forth between both values with no luck.

When I have 1 set to -1 and 2 set to 1 (as defaults) then I can view
camera1 on port 8081, and on port 8082 I see the motion square with
the date in the top left corner, but on 8082 it is a blank square and
says "Unable to open video device" and then the date underneath.

lsof -i -P shows what I'd expect :
motion 1060 root 7u IPv4 15670 0t0 TCP *:8080 (LISTEN)
motion 1060 root 9u IPv4 15671 0t0 TCP *:8081 (LISTEN)
motion 1060 root 11u IPv4 15674 0t0 TCP *:8082 (LISTEN)

Then for camera2 I change input from 1 to -1 and kill motion and
restart it. Now neither camera works and I don't even get the grey
screen I just a connection refused on both 8081 and 8082. The odd
thing is that at first lsof shows that 8080 and 8081 are open, and
then after a bit of time it shows that 8080 and 8082 are open. Oh
wait, after even more time (a minute?) they both give me the grey
screen and "unable to open video device" and now all 3 ports are open
like above.

Out of curiousity I set both camera1 and camera2 to input 1 and
neither works and no grey screens, and lsof -i only shows 8080 open.

I've jacked up log level to 9 but can't find anything obvious that is
wrong. Have done a fair bit of googling with no luck.

And of course seconds after sending one more google found this :

"SOLUTION
I wasn't thinking about the draw for the camera and was trying to just
have it powered through the usb on a raspberry pi (need a powered usb
hub). I am not sure however why the device file switches when there
is not enough power, so if you come across this an know please post a
reply."

Do you think this might be my problem as well?
I need a powered USB hub?

Regarding #1, Do you have this setting set to off?
# Restrict control connections to localhost only (default: on)
control_localhost off
