Hi Mark,

I set the parameter exactly as in your email:

text_left CAMERA %{host} %t

...and saw the expected results.

I installed 4.2.1 from the deb package as documented here
<https://motion-project.github.io/motion_build.html>. Very easy, hardly
any more trouble than using apt, and then modprobe is not necessary. I
do have the Pi camera configured as mmal so that might be another
difference. Good luck!

I sent a post to the user list a few days ago and got a reply saying:

I haven't heard anything about it since.? I should have known better
than to try including inline photos.

Do we have a moderator?? Perhaps out of town for the holidays? Should I
shrink the photos and resubmit?

David

According to github, the support for %{host} appeared first in 4.1. The
motion.c code for 4.0 does not have the change.

Pascal.

Jack:

Thanks for the quick feedback and the idea. There are other *conf files in
the /etc/motion
directory, but none seem to be getting pulled in -- the "camera" and
"camera_dir" directives
are both commented out.. Also, my "text_left" changes are getting
recognized, they just are
not displaying the expected out (i.e., "host" as opposed to my actual
hostname).

The only difference I can see is versions -- I'm on Motion 4.0 and you are
on 4.2.1. A very
quick scan of recent GIT activity does not appear to show changes in this
area, but ...
Normal rasbian updates will only allow me to get to 4.1.1, and that with
some difficulty.

Would you mind sending me the exact text_left (or whatever) string you used
that showed
your actual hostname? I suspect a syntax problem, though I've tried
enclosing %{host} in ", ', ` all
with no success.

Thanks

-Mark
